Read this before you build anything you find here.

BestExperimentIdeas is an educational and community platform. Projects are user-generated unless a project is explicitly identified as curated by us. You are responsible for deciding whether a project is appropriate and safe for you, your students or your workspace.

Project information may be wrong or incomplete

Projects are written by community members from their own experience. They may contain mistakes, omissions, outdated methods, missing hazards or steps that do not transfer to your materials, equipment or environment. We do not verify that a project works, that its results are reproducible, or that its safety notes are complete.

Safety information is not professional judgement

Safety notes on this site are a starting point, not a substitute for professional judgement, training, qualified supervision, applicable laws and regulations, school or institutional rules, published standards and codes, safety data sheets, or the manufacturer's instructions for any material, chemical or tool involved. Where those conflict with a project, follow them and not the project.

You decide what is appropriate

Before starting a build you are responsible for determining appropriate:

  • Personal protective equipment (eye, hand, respiratory, hearing, clothing).
  • Adult, teacher or professional supervision.
  • Tools, and whether you are trained to use them.
  • Materials, substitutions and their hazards.
  • Workspace, ventilation, containment, fire precautions and disposal.
  • Age suitability for everyone taking part.
  • Environmental conditions and the effect on anyone nearby.
  • Electrical safety, including voltage, current, isolation and mains work.
  • Chemical safety, including concentrations, incompatibilities, storage and waste.
  • Mechanical safety, including stored energy, pressure, rotation, heat and pinch points.
  • Biological safety, including sources, containment, sterilisation and disposal.

Restricted and high-risk activity

Some activities are not permitted here at all — see the Community Guidelines. Projects that declare significant hazards are routed to human review before they can go live publicly, and we may restrict, unpublish or remove any project we consider high risk. Review is a moderation step; it is not a safety certification.

About the AI assistance on this site

The assistant can help organise a write-up and flag things that look missing, including possible safety gaps. It is an aid to the author, not a safety review. An AI check does not mean a project is safe, complete, legal in your area or suitable for your setting. Never treat the absence of a warning as evidence that something is safe.

No guarantee of outcome

Nothing on this platform guarantees that a project will succeed, replicate a published result, satisfy a science-fair rubric, or meet any academic or professional requirement. Judging criteria, school rules and competition regulations are set by those bodies and it is your responsibility to meet them.

Emergencies

If something goes wrong — injury, fire, chemical exposure, electric shock — stop, make the area safe if you can do so without risk, and contact your local emergency services. Do not use this website as a source of emergency guidance.
